Intended Audience: All neonatal nurses

Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Define critical congenital heart disease (CCHD).
  2. Describe those defects that result in CCHD.
  3. Outline the symptoms seen in CCHD.
  4. Discuss the use of pulse oximetry in screening for CCHD.
  5. Identify national recommendations regarding the use of pulse oximetry in CCHD screening
  6. Identify the nursing implications in the use of pulse oximetry for CCHD screening.
  7. Discuss the diagnosis of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS).
  8. Outline the risk factors for BWS.
  9. Describe the acute and long-term management of BWS.
  10. Identify the prognosis for infants with BWS.
  11. Identify the selection criteria for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
  12. Outline the process of preparing a neonate for ECMO.
  13. Discuss the nursing management of a neonate on ECMO.
  14. Describe the function of the ECMO circuit.
  15. Reiterate the complications of ECMO.
