This presentation will explore the clinical features, neurodevelopmental consequences, and pathogenesis of common antenatal drug exposures. The extensive information regarding alcohol exposure will be utilized as a foundation, followed by discussion of prescription drug exposures including antidepressants, anxiolytics, and stimulants.

Purpose of this webinar
The Academy of Neonatal Nursing provides clinically current information on the technical, medical, and nursing aspects of neonatal care as well as the legal and ethical implications related to that care. This educational session provides information to nurses and other health care professionals who care for newborn, premature, and ill infants and their families. Specific objectives for this presentation are listed below.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the common features and neurodevelopmental impact of fetal alcohol syndrome.
  2. Describe the impact of exposure to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors on the neonate
  3. Recognize the impacts of benzodiazepines in pregnancy and the potential corollaries with prescription sleep aids
  4. Evaluate the acute and chronic impact of illicit and prescription stimulants in newborns and children
