Intended Audience: All neonatal nurses
Purpose of this CNE activity: The Academy of Neonatal Nursing provides clinically current information on the technical, medical, and nursing aspects of neonatal care as well as the legal and ethical implications related to that care. This CNE activity provides information to nurses and other health care professionals who care for newborn, premature, and ill infants and their families. Specific objectives for this presentation are listed below.
Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  • Define addiction.
  • Describe the incidence of drug addiction in the U.S.
  • Describe factors associated with drug use during pregnancy.
  • Identify the properties of common drugs associated with the development of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).
  • Identify the effects of common drugs used during pregnancy and neonatal outcome.
  • Identify management strategies for controlling drug dependence during pregnancy.
  • Describe the stigma of drug addiction during pregnancy.
  • Describe the signs of NAS.
  • Describe the most commonly used NAS scoring tool and the importance of being reliable in using this tool.
Requirements for Completion: The following requirements are necessary for successful completion of this CNE activity.
  • Access to a computer with an Internet connection
  • Complete and submit the evaluation for this CNE activity
