Purpose of this CNE activity: The Academy of Neonatal Nursing provides clinically current information on the technical, medical, and nursing aspects of neonatal care as well as the legal and ethical implications related to that care. This CNE activity provides information to nurses and other health care professionals who care for newborn, premature, and ill infants and their families. Specific objectives for this presentation are listed below.

Session Description: The pathophysiology of altered brain development in the preterm infant is described, highlighting the clinical factors and patterns of brain injury that are associated with these alterations. Outcomes of infants with brain injury and altered brain development are discussed. Data on the utility of MRI for predicting outcomes and the potential role for neuroprotective strategies are presented.
Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  • Explain two key processes thought to contribute to altered brain development in preterm infants.
  • Describe the typical MRI findings of altered brain development and prognostic ability of MRI.
  • Evaluate aspects of care that may improve brain development.
Requirements for Completion: The following requirements are necessary for successful completion of this CNE activity.
  • Access to a computer with an Internet connection
  • Attend/view at least 90% of the session
