Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Activity: "We are Family" No Really! Seriously! Not Kidding!

Presenter(s): Terry S. Johnson, APN, NNP-BC, MN

Total Contact Hours: 1.00 CH, 0.0 Rx

Intended Audience: All mother baby nurses

Purpose of this CNE activity: The Academy of Neonatal Nursing provides clinically current information on the technical, medical, and nursing aspects of neonatal care as well as the legal and ethical implications related to that care. This CNE activity provides information to nurses and other health care professionals who care for newborn, premature, and ill infants and their families. Specific objectives for this presentation are listed below.

Session Description: Mother baby nurses are by very definition “Family Nurses.” And families are different—by composition, values, health care preferences, education, and cultural and religious affinities. Mother baby nurses have the demanding responsibility to meet these families—possibly for just a few hours—to teach them “everything they need to know” to care for their new infant and themselves. It can be overwhelming to everyone. Let's look at strategies to “Lean In” with these families to promote best outcomes for all concerned.

Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  • Describe three demographic characteristics of child-bearing families in today's healthcare systems.
  • Identify the five components of the LEARN Model of Cultural Competence for health care providers.
  • Discuss the policy position of the American Academy of Pediatrics in defining and working successfully with families of different cultures.
Requirements for Completion: The following requirements are necessary for successful completion of this CNE activity.
  • Access to a computer with an Internet connection
  • Attend/view at least 90% of the session
  • Complete and submit the evaluation for this CNE activity
