Intended Audience: All neonatal and mother baby nurses
Purpose of this CNE activity: The Academy of Neonatal Nursing provides clinically current information on the technical, medical, and nursing aspects of neonatal care as well as the legal and ethical implications related to that care. This CNE activity provides information to nurses and other health care professionals who care for newborn, premature, and ill infants and their families. Specific objectives for this presentation are listed below.
Session Description: The national opioid crisis is reflected in the increasing number of NAS-affected infants seen in our NICUs, but drug exposure in pregnancy goes well beyond narcotics. Ms. Browne-Wagner describes the current drugs of abuse (legal and illegal), their pharmacokinetics, and the effects on pregnant patients and their newborns. Management recommendations will be discussed.

Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the current opioid usage phenomenon.
  • Discuss the management of neonatal abstinence syndrome.
  • Discuss current laws regarding mandatory drug testing of pregnant patients and newborns.
Requirements for Completion: The following requirements are necessary for successful completion of this CNE activity.
  • Access to a computer with an Internet connection
  • Attend/view at least 90% of the session
  • Complete and submit the evaluation for this CNE activity
