Purpose of this CNE activity: The Academy of Neonatal Nursing provides clinically current information on the technical, medical, and nursing aspects of neonatal care as well as the legal and ethical implications related to that care. This CNE activity provides information to nurses and other health care professionals who care for newborn, premature, and ill infants and their families. Specific objectives for this presentation are listed below.
Session Description: This in-depth session includes a comprehensive panel discussion of chemical and opioid dependency in women and caring for newborns with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Speakers will identify maternal risk factors and elements of drug testing and address newborn treatment protocols and their pharmacologic aspects. Discuss social and ethical care of the family and the challenges they encounter. Explore staff and medical personnel education and training needs. Take a journey with one unit as they meet patient needs, deal with barriers, and collaborate to provide care for this vulnerable population.

Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the current incidence of infants with NAS.
  • Discuss the financial impact of NAS.
  • Describe nursing care strategies and best practices for the infant with NAS.
Requirements for Completion: The following requirements are necessary for successful completion of this CNE activity.
  • Access to a computer with an Internet connection
  • Attend/view at least 90% of the session
  • Complete and submit the evaluation for this CNE activity
