Purpose of this CNE activity: The Academy of Neonatal Nursing provides clinically current information on the technical, medical, and nursing aspects of neonatal care as well as the legal and ethical implications related to that care. This CNE activity provides information to nurses and other health care professionals who care for newborn, premature, and ill infants and their families. Specific objectives for this presentation are listed below.
Session Description: Dr. Visscher discusses the development and physiology of premature and full term neonatal skin. Care of the diaper area skin is presented and discussed in terms of how the skin care strategies/products impact the physiology. Key considerations for selection of strategies and products for the NICU population are explored.

Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  • Describe premature and full-term skin at birth and how it changes throughout the first few months of life.
  • Discuss the factors impacting diaper skin integrity and function relative to gestational age.
  • Describe strategies to prevent diaper skin compromise and maintain skin health.
Requirements for Completion: The following requirements are necessary for successful completion of this CNE activity.
  • Access to a computer with an Internet connection
  • Attend/view at least 90% of the session
  • Complete and submit the evaluation for this CNE activity
