Our speakers discuss their ongoing, continuous quality improvement projects focusing on minimizing the need for pharmacologic treatment for infants with NAS by preserving the mother infant dyad. They also describe coordination with Project Nurture, a Health Share Coordinated Care Organization, which is a sponsored pilot project focusing on providing complete care of pregnant women with opioid use disorder, from prenatal care, through inpatient maternity care, to the postpartum setting.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the increasing incidence and clinical presentation of neonatal abstinence syndrome.
  • Discuss why the first line treatment for neonatal abstinence syndrome is non-pharmacologic and should be optimized before starting pharmacologic treatment.
  • Discuss new approaches to the evaluation and treat abstinence syndrome.
