Neonatal encephalopathy is the most frequent known cause of neonatal brain injury. Current evidence-based therapy consists of induced hypothermia; however, this therapy is only modestly effective. Dr. Papile discusses the risks and benefits of potential adjuvant therapies.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe one potential adjuvant therapy for the treatment of neonatal hypoxic/ischemic encephalopathy.
  • Discuss the limitations of cooling therapy for neonatal hypoxic/ischemic encephalopathy.

  • Lu-Ann Papile, MD, Professor Emerita, University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center
