Ms. Lund discusses how to achieve and maintain normothermia and combat transepidermal water loss. Care practices to reduce skin injuries in this population are addressed. In addition, neuro-protective strategies, respiratory care, and other caregiving practices are examined in light of the new curriculum developed for educating practitioners who care for the micropremie.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss strategies to address extremely increased transepidermal water loss and evaporative heat loss in ELBW infants.
  • Describe treatment for skin breakdown due to the use of medical adhesives, skin disinfectants, and medical devices such as NCPAP in ELBW infants.
  • Identify strategies for protecting the developing brain in the ELBW infant.
