Description

Dr. Darling discusses the difficult, yet extremely important responsibility, of counseling parents prior to the delivery of extremely premature infants that are bordering on the limits of viability. An overview of medical ethics is discussed before describing the added ethical dilemmas with regards to the extremely premature infant, including the role of the parents as the decision makers in this emotion-charged setting.

  • Describe the significant decrease in the limit of viability and the increase in survival that has occured over time.
  • Discuss common ethical dilemmas with resuscitating infants at the limit of viability.
