Description

Why is there so much variation among NICUs’ length of stay (LOS)? Even after risk-adjustment, some NICUs are much more proficient and efficient at caring for newborns and transitioning them home. Length of stay is by far the leading cost indicator for NICUs andthere are several reliable strategies available to reduce unnecessary hospital stay time and thus provide innovative value. Dr. Kaempf discusses how NICUs can implement evidence-based, practical strategies that reduce waste and improve safety and family satisfaction.

Learning Objectives:

  • List the principle drivers of prolonged NICU length of stay.
  • State which drivers of prolonged length of NICU stay are under our collective control.
  • Discuss several concrete improvement practices that can decrease unnecessary LOS in <32 week gestational age infants, 32-36 week infants, and term infants.

Speaker(s):

  • Joseph Kaempf, MD, Medical Director CQI and Clinical Research, Providence St. Vincent Medical Center
