Intended Audience: All neonatal nurses

Purpose of this CNE activity: The Academy of Neonatal Nursing provides clinically current information on the technical, medical, and nursing aspects of neonatal care as well as the legal and ethical implications related to that care. This CNE activity provides information to nurses and other health care professionals who care for newborn, premature, and ill infants and their families. Specific objectives for this presentation are listed below.

Session Description: SINC is a quality improvement initiative that was developed to support safe oral feeding opportunities for infants requiring continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) support. SINC is an evidence-based algorithm that provides common language and feeding goals for parents and the health care team. Providing frequent opportunities to orally feed with meticulous attention to infant cues allow most infants supported on CPAP to safely eat. Ms. Dalgleish discusses feeding strategies, safety data, and outcomes from an NICU with a novel approach to reducing lung disease with CPAP while allowing careful feeding opportunities.

Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

Describe the relationship between breathing and eating.
Discuss safe feeding practices for neonates on CPAP.
