Purpose of this CNE activity: The Academy of Neonatal Nursing provides clinically current information on the technical, medical, and nursing aspects of neonatal care as well as the legal and ethical implications related to that care. This CNE activity provides information to nurses and other health care professionals who care for newborn, premature, and ill infants and their families. Specific objectives for this presentation are listed below.

Session Description: The outcomes of infants born in the periviable period, which encompasses infants of 20 0/7 weeks to 25 6/7 weeks EGA, have changed remarkably over the time period in which NICUs and neonatology as a sub-specialty evolved. There are large variations among-hospitals in the approaches to care, the survivability of these infants, and the eventual proportion of infants with moderate/severe disabilities. Dr. Ohning discusses the recent data and approaches to counseling families who are facing such a birth.

Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

Discuss practical aspects of prenatal counseling.
Explain how outcomes and practice guidelines are changing for patients at the limit of perinatal viability.
Identify a structure and format for having serious "Life and Death" conversations with families.
