Intended Audience: All neonatal nurses

Purpose of this CNE activity: The Academy of Neonatal Nursing provides clinically current information on the technical, medical, and nursing aspects of neonatal care as well as the legal and ethical implications related to that care. This CNE activity provides information to nurses and other health care professionals who care for newborn, premature, and ill infants and their families. Specific objectives for this presentation are listed below.

Session Description: Dr. Neal discusses the role of prematurity on development and adult outcomes in behavioral health, focusing on the influence that perinatal stress may have on this area of brain development. Included in the discussion is how the NICU Network Neurobehavioral Scale (NNNS) and methylation analysis are used to predict long-term risk in preterm infants. The goal is to develop an overall understanding on how clinical and genetic measures can be applied to preterm populations to predict long-term cognitive and developmental outcomes.

Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

Discuss the influence that perinatal stress may have on later brain development.
Describe how the NICU Network Neurobehavioral Scale and methylation analysis are used to predict long-term risk in preterm infants.
Explain how clinical and genetic measures can be applied to preterm populations to predict long-term cognitive and developmental outcomes.
