Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

Identify key barriers to optimal data collection from Black and Brown mothers and birthing people.
Describe why current efforts to address racism and bias in maternity care have failed to achieve equity.
Identify three key strategies for improving the Black patient experience in maternity and infant care.

Purpose of this CNE activity: Implicit bias has been well documented as directly linked to the Black maternal mortality crises and high rates of Black infant deaths. In addition to anti-bias training and evidence-based maternity care, how can centering the lived experience of care of Black birthing people advance equity and improve perinatal care? Using data from Irth (as in Birth, but without the B for bias), a non-profit, doctor and hospital review and rating platform for Black and brown women and birthing people to find and leave experiences of care at OB/GYNs, birthing hospitals, and pediatricians. Ms. Allers shares findings from Irth's national database. Irth captures the intersectional experiences of birth at U.S. hospitals from Black women and birthing people, including lactation support, and analyzed the data to identify trends and patterns of bias to develop insights, and actionable strategies to improve perinatal care and support for Black and other families of color.
