Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Activity: Early Neonatal Nutrition: Does it Really Matter?

Purpose of this CNE activity: The Academy of Neonatal Nursing provides clinically current information on the technical, medical, and nursing aspects of neonatal care as well as the legal and ethical implications related to that care. This CNE activity provides information to nurses and other health care professionals who care for newborn, premature, and ill infants and their families. Specific objectives for this presentation are listed below.

Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

Discuss developmental physiology of the human gastrointestinal system.
Identify basic anatomic concepts in fluid balance.
Discuss the role of electrolytes and minerals in the maintenance of normal physiologic function.
Discuss transitional changes that affect a newborn’s fluid and nutritional status after birth.
Describe the initial and ongoing fluid and nutritional needs of the premature and term newborn.
List the indications for and complications of using total parenteral nutrition in the newborn.
Discuss current research on early trophic feedings in premature and sick newborns.
Describe appropriate methods of feeding infants at various gestational ages.
Discuss the short- and long-term effects of early nutrition.

Requirements for Completion: The following requirements are necessary for successful completion of this CNE activity.

Access to a computer with an Internet connection
Attend at least 90 percent of each session
Complete and submit the evaluation for this CNE activity
