Purpose of this CNE activity: The Academy of Neonatal Nursing provides clinically current information on the technical, medical, and nursing aspects of neonatal care as well as the legal and ethical implications related to that care. This CNE activity provides information to nurses and other health care professionals who care for newborn, premature, and ill infants and their families. Specific objectives for this presentation are listed below.

Session Description: Dr. Seacrist discusses the initiatives from the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC), AWHONN, and the National Patient Safety Council to reduce maternal mortality from postpartum hemorrhage. She discusses the national guidelines, and identifies the barriers to and facilitators of program implementation from hospitals that have successfully adopted recommendations. Dr. Seacrist includes quality improvement opportunities identified during maternal mortality case review.

Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

Identify state and national efforts to reduce maternal mortality from postpartum hemorrhage.
Discuss postpartum hemorrhage program elements that should be implemented at your healthcare facility.
