Intended Audience: All neonatal nurses

Purpose of this CNE activity:The Academy of Neonatal Nursing provides clinically current information on the technical, medical, and nursing aspects of neonatal care as well as the legal and ethical implications related to that care. This CNE activity provides information to nurses and other health care professionals who care for newborn, premature, and ill infants and their families. Specific objectives for this presentation are listed below.

Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

Explain the neuropathophysiology of hypoxic-ischemic events in newborns.
Describe the role of therapeutic hypothermia for the treatment of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in newborns.
Identify key components of nursing care for neonates undergoing whole-body cooling.
Identify the at-risk group of patients who may require a tracheostomy.
Outline key teaching points important in preparing parents to care for their infant with a tracheostomy.
Identify the mediators of pulmonary vascular reactivity.
Identify the mechanism of action of bosentan on the pulmonary vascularity.
Summarize the published evidence on the use of bosentan in the neonatal and pediatric population for treatment of pulmonary hypertension.
Describe the normal coagulation pathway.
Identify normal and abnormal prothrombin time (PT), activated partial prothromboplastin time (aPTT), and platelet counts.
Identify the appropriate site for drawing coagulation studies in the newborn.

Requirements for Completion:The following requirements are necessary for successful completion of this CNE activity.

Access to a computer with an Internet connection
Pass the posttest with a score of 80%
Complete and submit the evaluation for this CNE activity
