Sheila M. Gephart PhD, RN, FAAN

Associate Professor, Interim PhD Program Director, University of Arizona

Dr. Sheila Gephart is a Neonatal Nurse Scientist with expertise in informatics, necrotizing enterocolitis, and implementation science. Her work started at the bedside as a nurse when she was troubled by the sudden development of NEC in a cluster of preterm infants. Her original research was to develop and validate a tool for NEC risk awareness, GutCheckNEC. Later she and her team worked with parent groups to formalize a toolkit called "NEC-Zero." She is a professor at the University of Arizona and particularly enjoys working with developing nurse scientists. Her current work involves continuing to refine GutCheckNEC and using telehealth delivered mentoring (Project ECHO) to continue to improve adoption of NEC prevention practices in the U.S.
