Objectives: Upon completion, learners will be able to:

Identify newborns at risk for hypoglycemia.
Identify which infants with neonatal hypoglycemia are candidates for initiation of oral glucose gel.
Discuss how to implement a pathway for treatment of newborns with asymptomatic hypoglycemia.

Purpose of this CNE activity: Oral glucose gel has been shown to be an effective treatment for asymptomatic neonatal hypoglycemia. Dr. Chinnock will outline of the clinical effectiveness of oral glucose gel, its effect on number of transfers to higher level of care, its cost effective-ness, and his center's experience with initiating a protocolized approach to using it to treat infants identified with asymptomatic hypoglycemia in the well newborn nursery.
