EDITOR

Jeanette Zaichkin, RN, MN, NNP-BC worked as both a staff nurse and a clinical nurse specialist in Level II and Level III nurseries for more than 30 years. Jeanette was the nurse consultant to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Steering Committee from 1998 - 2022 and served as editor of the NRP Instructor Toolkit and associate editor of the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation. Jeanette is also the editor of a book for parents, titled Understanding the NICU, published by the AAP. Jeanette leads Positive Pressure, PLLC, a business enterprise that provides consultation and program development for neonatal resuscitation, simulation and debriefing, and instructor development.

Maternal Complications

Alta B. Kendall, MN, ARNP, NNP-BC, is lead Neonatal Nurse Practitioner for the Newborn Service at Multicare Capital Medical Center in Olympia, WA. Alta serves as a journal peer reviewer for Advances in Neonatal Care and was a peer reviewer for the 6th edition of the S.T.A.B.L.E. Program curriculum. Alta is an instructor for S.T.A.B.L.E and NRP and serves on her hospital’s medical staff credentialing committee.

General Topic Neonate

Nicole Nyberg, MSN, APRN, NNP-BC, is a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner with Novant Healthcare. She received her BSN with a minor in Psychology from Purdue University. She worked as a NICU nurse for over 10 years before she pursued her MSN from Rush University and became a board certified NNP in 2013. She is a clinical consultant for AngelEye Health, a published author and created a NICU Journal, Our NICU Roadmap. She is the CEO and Founder of Empowering NICU Parents and the creator and host of the Empowering NICU Parents Podcast. After her son was delivered at 23 weeks’ gestation, she has devoted herself to supporting, educating, and empowering NICU parents and clinicians with a particular focus on bringing awareness to the positive effects parental engagement and family-integrated care have on the infant’s long-term trajectory and the family’s overall well-being.

Nutrition and Feeding

Maria Cristina Gallup, MSN, APRN, CCNS (N), NNP-BC is a Neonatal Clinical Nurse Specialist at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. She works collaboratively to improve the quality of patient care and desired patient outcomes in their level IV, 34-bed NICU. She collaborates with providers, nurses, and clinical leaders in all quality improvement initiatives to provide optimal neonatal care and standardize evidence-based practices. Cristina maintains dual board certifications as Clinical Nurse Specialist and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. She is actively engaged in their Neonatal Simulation program and an instructor-mentor for the Neonatal Resuscitation Program. Cristina has been a volunteer member for the Academy of Neonatal Nursing's education committee since 2015.

Cardiac

Erin Broush, MSW, MSN, NNP-BC has over 14 years experience in neonatology and is currently a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner at Duke University and Duke Regional Hospitals in Durham, NC. She also has served as a guest lecture for the the Duke University SON NNP program. Her quality improvement areas of interests are developmental care in the neonatal population and neonatal abstinence syndrome.

Respiratory

Jenna Staggs, DNP, APRN, NNP-BC, RNC-NIC, C-ONQS, C-ELBW is a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner for United Telehealth Services in Winchester, TN. She worked as a neonatal nurse for 12 years prior to earning an MSN and DNP from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2018 and 2020. In 2023 she earned a post-graduate certificate in Nursing Education from the University of South Alabama. Dr. Staggs is passionate about life-long learning, evidence-based care, and empowering nurses at all levels. She maintains several NCC certifications in neonatal nursing and quality, and was a Synova Emerging Leaders Fellow in 2022. Jenna serves on several national committees including ANN's Education Committee, two NANN committees, and the Tennessee Nurses Association’s Government Affairs Committee. She also served on the NANNP Educational Standards and Curriculum Guidelines for Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Programs, 4th Ed., Task Force. Jenna is selected to receive NANN’s 2023 APRN Rising Star award.

Gastrointestinal

Julie Medas, MSN, APRN-CNS is the Neonatal Clinical Nurse Specialist in a 49-bed Level III NICU at The MetroHealth System in Cleveland Ohio. She is active as a NRP instructor and STABLE instructor and coordinates educational programming within NICU and Women & Children’s department. Julie collaborates with members of the multidisciplinary team to oversee quality improvement initiatives and ensure consistent science-informed care delivery. She has published and presented at numerous conferences. Her passion is to mentor and empower clinical nurses’ and their professional development. Julie is also currently serving as a consultant at East Carolina University School of Nursing’s Neonatal CNS program.

Kelly Gilhousen, DNP, MSN, RNC-NIC, RN-BC spent 24 years as a clinical nurse, unit-based Education Coordinator, STABLE instructor, and preceptor in a 49-bed level III NICU at The MetroHealth System in Cleveland Ohio. Dr. Gilhousen is currently a Nursing Professional Development Specialist and Coordinator of the Nurse Residency Transition to Practice Program, providing newly licensed nurses with a structured program designed to develop competence and professional growth. She is the recipient of the 2019 NANN Navigator Award, has presented at the Academy of Neonatal Nursing, Magnet and Association of Nursing Professional Development Conferences. She is a current board member of the Pentagon chapter of the Association of Nursing Professional Development Specialists.

Genitourinary & Hematopoietic

Curry Bordelon, DNP, MBA, NNP-BC, CPNP-AC, CNE is an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean for Graduate Clinical Education-DNP Program for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing. With more than 27 years of neonatal nurse and nurse practitioner experience, Curry maintains dual board certifications as a Neonatal and Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Dr Bordelon is an education liaison to the Executive Committee for the Academy of Neonatal Nursing, Vice President of the American Association for Men in Nursing, and is a member of the Curricula Leadership Committee for the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. Dr. Bordelon has extensive experience in nursing leadership, curricula design, and innovative teaching strategies. Curry is an author for textbooks, peer-reviewed journals, and presented at the national and international levels on neonatal care, nursing leadership, diversity, and teaching innovations.

Debbie Fraser, MN, NNP, CNEON(C), FCAN is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Disciplines at Athabasca University. She holds an appointment in the Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Manitoba. Deb maintains an active practice in the NICU at St Boniface General Hospital, and is the Editor-in-Chief of Neonatal Network. She is the author of two nursing textbooks and over 70 book chapters and peer-reviewed articles on topics related to high-risk newborns.

Neurologic/Neuromuscular

Sheron Wagner APRN, MSN, NNP-BC is a Clinical Assistant Professor and coordinator of the NNP program at Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing specializing in neonatology and teaching students through lecture and simulation. She practices at Parkland Health & Hospital Systems, Dallas Texas and Millennium Neonatology, Denison Texas. Dr. Wagner is a member of Sigma Theta Tau and the University of Alabama Honor Society. She has co-authored a chapter in a nursing textbook and published several articles related to respiratory management in premature neonates. She does outreach by teaching newborn stabilization to small community healthcare facilities and by teaching common neonatal procedures in simulation labs for nurse practitioners, Fellow and Attending physicians. She is a certified STABLE and NRP instructor as well as Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) trainer. She is currently involved in global health initiatives in The Gambia and in Uganda presenting lectures for neonatal nurses. She was also a member of “Jamaica Yes”, a charitable organization that provides school meals for underserved children in Jamaica.

Kathryn Rudd, DNP, MSN, BSN, RNC-NIC, c-NPT has been a neonatal nurse for over 30 years and has experience in nursing education for the last 18 years. She has functioned as a neonatal nurse educator, and is an NRP, STABLE, and BLS instructor. Kathryn is certified in high risk neonatal nursing, neonatal and pediatric transport, end of life in pediatric and neonatal nursing, and has a post graduate certification in clinical education and biomedical ethics. She is the author of several chapters in neonatal textbooks, including most recently, the Core Curriculum for Neonatal Nursing published in 2020. The Critical Components of Pediatric Nursing (2nd ed.) by Rudd and Kocisko won the American Journal of Nursing AJN Book of the Year in December 2019 and the 3rd edition was published in 2022. Kathryn has published both nationally and internationally and has been a contributor to Neonatal Network since 2011. Kathryn is married to her high school sweetheart and has four children and two grandchildren.

Genetics & HEENT

Christine Emmons, MSN, RNC-NIC, CNL, C-ONQS is the Clinical Educator-Neonatal ICU at HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. She has 26 years nursing experience with extensive background in neonatal nursing as an outreach educator, clinical educator, and bedside nurse. She has been active in state perinatal quality projects addressing mothers and newborns affected by opioids. She is a current member of the ANN Executive Committee and Education Committee. She is a STABLE Program Lead Instructor and Neonatal Resuscitation Program Instructor. She holds National Certifications in Neonatal Intensive Care (RNC-NIC), Obstetrics and Neonatal Quality & Safety (C-ONQS) and as a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL). She is currently serving her first term as AWHONN Illinois Section Chair. Chris has special interest in the care and outcomes of newborns delivered in settings outside hospitals with obstetric services and has developed numerous simulation-based education programs for first responders and emergency department staff.

Pharmacology

Developmental Care

Sheri Kimmey, MSN, RNC-NIC, NDCS, C-ELBW, C-TIP is the Developmental Care Specialist in the NICU at Nebraska Methodist Women’s Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska. Sheri offers weekly classes for families, she writes individualized developmental plans, she coordinates/facilitates the NICU follow up clinic and is responsible for the developmental education on the unit. Sheri also does prenatal consults to educate on the Eat Sleep Console model of care and educates on the infants behavioral cues after birth. She is actively involved in the Unit Based Council, Developmental committee, NICU Practice Council, and Perinatal Loss Committees.

Anna Holcomb, DNP, APRN, RNC-NIC is a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner at Nebraska Methodist Women’s Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska. She is an NRP instructor at the Women’s Hospital and is passionate about Neuro-protective care in the NICU. Anna was also involved in the creation of ANN’s Guide to NICU Care.

Family Issues

Valerie Yu, DNP, APRN, CPNP, FNP-C, NNP-BC is an Assistant Professor in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. She maintains an active practice as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and is a provider in the NICU follow-up clinic at Bryan Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. Valerie is a current member of the Academy of Neonatal Nursing Education Committee and a Neonatal Resuscitation Program instructor.

Professional Issues
