The purpose of this column is to provide a heightened awareness regarding the risk for subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) that results from trauma causing ischemic injury to adipose tissue, and its diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

Describe the pathophysiology of SCFN.
List early signs of hypercalcemia.
Discuss management of the infant diagnosed with hypercalcemia as a result of SCFN.

Purpose of this CE Activity: The purpose of this column is to provide a heightened awareness for clinicians regarding the risk for
SCFN that results from trauma causing ischemic injury to adipose tissue and hypercalcemia a rare, but life threatening complication, its diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.
